Many texts on partial differential equations (PDEs) are too detailed and voluminous, making them daunting to the average student. This undergraduate treatment is designed as a no-frills text that explains completely but succinctly the major methods used in elementary PDEs. This text stands apart by providing full but concise explanations of the essence of the topics and many worked examples and exercises, which should facilitate a quick understanding of the material. Solution Techniques for Elementary Partial Differential Equations has been class tested with great success, and postscript files will be available to instructors for producing overhead projector transparencies for class instruction.

Second order linear parabolic and elliptic equations arise frequently in mathematics and other disciplines. For example parabolic equations are to be found in statistical mechanics and solid state theory, their infinite dimensional counterparts are important in fluid mechanics, mathematical finance and population biology, whereas nonlinear parabolic equations arise in control theory. Here the authors present a state of the art treatment of the subject from a new perspective. The main tools used are probability measures in Hilbert and Banach spaces and stochastic evolution equations. There is then a discussion of how the results in the book can be applied to control theory. This area is developing very rapidly and there are numerous notes and references that point the reader to more specialised results not covered in the book. Coverage of some essential background material will help make the book self-contained and increase its appeal to those entering the subject.

The unifying approach of functional analysis is to view functions as points in some abstract vector space and the differential and integral operators relating these points as linear transformations on these spaces. The author presents the basics of functional analysis with attention paid to both expository style and technical detail, while getting to interesting results as quickly as possible. The book is accessible to students who have completed first courses in linear algebra and real analysis. Topics are developed in their historical context, with accounts of the past - including biographies - appearing throughout the text. The book offers suggestions and references for further study, and many exercises. Karen Saxe is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Before joining the faculty at Macalester, she held a two-year FIPSE post-doctoral position at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She currently serves on the editorial board of the MAA's College Mathematics Journal. This is her first book.

Simulating, Analyzing, and Animating Dynamical Systems: A Guide to XPPAUT for Researchers and Students provides sophisticated numerical methods for the fast and accurate solution of a variety of equations, including ordinary differential equations, delay equations, integral equations, functional equations, and some partial differential equations, as well as boundary value problems. It introduces many modeling techniques and methods for analyzing the resulting equations. Instructors, students, and researchers will all benefit from this book, which demonstrates how to use software tools to simulate and study sets of equations that arise in a variety of applications. Instructors will learn how to use computer software in their differential equations and modeling classes, while students will learn how to create animations of their equations that can be displayed on the World Wide Web. Researchers will be introduced to useful tricks that will allow them to take full advantage of XPPAUT's capabilities.

This accessible guide for students, teachers and performers at all levels unravels the complexities of musical performance and focuses on key aspects of learning, playing and responding to music. A survey of performance through the ages leads to a presentation of basic historical, analytical and psychological concepts. Four chapters follow on teaching, development, practice and memorisation. The next section considers the 'translation' from score to sound, physical projection, ensemble playing and performance anxiety. The final section addresses the act of listening, the legacy of recordings, music criticism and 'performers on performance'.
